Popular scientific report about our project released
We have released a new popular science report that presents the main findings from three years of research into next generation bioenergy systems. The report introduces the Biomass Top Cycle (BTC) concept, an advanced approach that combines renewable biomass, high efficiency heat and power production, and flexible hydrogen generation in one integrated plant.
The report explains how BTC technology can help Europe build a cleaner and more resilient energy system. By switching between power production and hydrogen generation, the BTC plant can support the electricity grid when demand is high and produce renewable hydrogen when wind and solar output is plentiful. This flexibility makes it a valuable complement to weather-dependent renewable energy.
Readers will find accessible summaries of the project’s main scientific advances, including:
A new high pressure gasification technology that uses biomass more efficiently
A flexible burner design capable of stable and clean hydrogen combustion
System studies showing how BTC technology can improve district heating and industrial energy systems in Sweden and Spain
Environmental and social assessments that demonstrate clear benefits for communities and regional economies
The report is written for a broad audience and includes clear explanations, illustrations, and examples. It shows how the Bio-FlexGen project brings together engineering innovation, environmental responsibility, and practical energy system analysis.
The BTC concept offers a pathway towards renewable heat, power, and hydrogen that uses local biomass resources and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The findings in this report provide valuable guidance for policymakers, industry partners, and all stakeholders working towards Europe’s climate and energy goals.
